If you’re wondering why this list is a bit on the short side instead of featuring every outdoor app under the sun. I only recommend apps I actually use myself.
The app stores are packed with thousands of flashy options, and new ones pop up every week. But if I haven't tested it out, it's not going on my page.
Every app featured here has been put through its paces on my own walks and adventures. I know how they work and I reckon they're genuinely useful.
That goes for all the other bits and bobs, too—not just the ones that keep you on the right path. Whether it's a handy tool for figuring out what bird is singing in the trees above you or an instant identifier for a strange plant you've spotted on the verge
Are there other apps out there? Of course there are but I'd much rather give you proper, honest advice on a few tried-and-tested favourites than write about a load of software I've barely even looked at.
HiiKER
The HiiKER app is a dedicated digital mapping and route-planning tool designed specifically for hikers, walkers, and backpackers. It features over 130,000 verified trails, premium topographic maps (such as Ordnance Survey and Harvey Maps), and free offline map storage for basic trail layers.
OS Maps
OS Maps App is the official digital mapping tool from Ordnance Survey, providing detailed Great Britain topographic data. It features OS Explorer (1:25,000) and OS Landranger (1:50,000) maps, live GPS location tracking, and digital route planning.
Merlin Bird ID
Merlin Bird ID is a free mobile application created by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology that identifies birds using photos, live audio recordings, or a simple questionnaire
iNaturalist
iNaturalist is a free mobile app and website that lets you identify plants, animals, and fungi using photos. It uses smart computer tools to guess what you found and connects you with a large group of real people who check and confirm your discoveries.
Encounter Nature
The Encounter app is a free, guided digital nature journal created by author Melissa Harrison to help people in Great Britain and Ireland record daily wildlife sightings, build a habit of noticing the outdoors, and deepen their personal connection to the natural world
Geocaching
Geocaching app is a mobile treasure-hunting app that turns the real world into a game by helping you find hidden containers called caches. It is available for free download on iOS and Android devices through the Geocaching Mobile Platform.
